I work with these life challenges:
Chronic pain and illness including migraine headaches, sleep
disorders, and cancer
Loss
and grief (including approaching death)
Post
traumatic stress (depression, anxiety 'disorders')
Addictions and compulsions
Sexualized and physical abuse
Life transitions
Relationship struggles
My experience as a mother of two daughters has yielded deep insight
into the complexities of human development. I also bring my
experience of diverse cultures, ethnicities and sexual/gender
orientation into my practice. I have a deep belief in the strength
and resilience of the human spirit as well as in the power of
community to transform and alter how lives are lived. History of Practice
I have had the pleasure of working with individuals, groups, families
and communities as a social worker, group facilitator and therapist
since 1980. In addition to private practice, I have worked in the
addictions field, for the Vancouver Island Cancer Centre and for
family counselling agencies. I have facilitated more than a hundred
workshops and have extensive teaching experience in early childhood
education and in social work.
I am currently teaching at the School of Social Work at UVic.
My
experience in working with marginalized populations has deepened my
appreciation of different ways of knowing. My work is informed by a
feminist, anti racist, anti heterosexist lens. Qualities
My intention is to work with the utmost integrity. I bring respect,
compassion, humour and honesty into my practice.
Training
Since 1980 I have been involved in
numerous trainings and workshops. In 2003 I completed the advanced
level of training in Somatic Experiencing. I have been studying
Somatic Transformation work for the past three years. This work
specifically emphasizes developmental/relational trauma from a
neurobiological perspective. I have also studied process work,
Capacitar healing practices, Satir family work and continue to
engage in an exploration of what it means to work anti oppressively.
I attended the WorldWork forum in London, England (April 2008)
www.worldwork.org. In June 2008, I co-presented a
workshop called Lessons from the River in Mind/Body/Spirit at the
Third North American Conference on Spirituality and Social Work in
New Brunswick, Canada.
